Dear Nav,

I want to tell you a story about Carol*. When Carol's husband passed away unexpectedly, she could no longer afford the mortage on her own. She not only lost her partner, but she also lost the home they once shared.   

With no one to turn to, Carol found shelter in a spare room at the pub. Weeks quickly turned into months as she waited for public housing.  

"No one knew I was homeless. I always thought

this would be temporary but it's starting to feel like forever."

As a Community Services Worker at Mission Australia, I help people experiencing hidden homelessness.

When I first met Carol, I helped her with groceries, overdue bills and provided her with support through some of her more difficult days. Together, we navigated the public housing system and secured a permanent home for Carol.

Did you know that older women over 55 years are the fastest growing group of people requesting help from specialist homelessness services like ours? ²

Many of these women have little to no retirement savings and can be drastically impacted by unexpected life events like a health crisis or death of a loved one. Without help, they face the risk of homelessness at an already vulnerable age.
